Share Some Big Smiles on International Happiness Day

This year’s cold March weather is making its best effort to dampen our spirits, but this month there’s an extra reason to keep on smiling. That’s because International Happiness Day is coming up on the 20th, which is a day to celebrate all of our reasons to be cheerful, and to spread some positive thoughts amongst all of our loved ones too!

Despite its rather playful name, International Happiness Day is actually an official event that was first declared by the United Nations in 2012, and the date coincides with the spring equinox. The UN believed that it was necessary to designate a special day for happiness as it’s a fundamental human need, and one that governments should take into consideration when creating or improving their public policies.

We agree that those are great reasons to dedicate an entire day to being happy, and there are so many ways in which you can make this year’s International Happiness Day one to smile about.

Doing something that makes you feel good on International Happiness Day is a great place to start. Perhaps you feel revved-up after going for a morning run, maybe you like to dance around your living room to a favourite record, or possibly all it takes to cheer you up is a making a nice crispy bacon sandwich for breakfast – whatever it takes for you to inject a big dose of positivity into your day, do it on International Happiness Day, and enjoy it completely guilt-free!

Give a Grin

However, we think that one of the best ways to commemorate International Happiness Day is to make other people feel happy too, and sometimes it’s the smallest gestures that make the biggest difference. Complimenting a friend’s outfit, offering your seat on the bus to someone less able, or just giving a special person a big hug are all easy ways to share the optimistic spirit of the day, at no cost to you.
On the other hand if you’re feeling a little more generous, why not take a mate out for coffee, bring some sweet treats in for your co-workers or, if you’ve got a faraway friend you’d like to share a smile with, send them a little something that will make them grin. The greetings card specialist Hallmark have a fantastic range of funny, sweet and cheerful cards that are just perfect for International Happiness Day, and will help ensure that you spread your cheer to all corners of the world!
